Your award winning forewarn triple-lindy doppler reverse hula-hoop live forecast: Spelling bee edition

We writers muck up every so often: misspell a word here, misplace a comma there. That is the price you pay when you work under pressure.

So it is painfully obvious to us that Hurricane Tropical Storm Gustav must have the meteorological community on edge. An alert reader noticed during last evening's KBMT-TV evening news (both at 6 and 10), that Chief Weatherdude (our word, we'll work out the copyright later) Gary Childress was particularly fond of this one particular on-air graphic.

The graphic showed water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and the "CARRIBEAN." Really? So Gary, if that's the case, what are the water temps like in the actual "CARIBBEAN?" Do they differ from those in the "CARRIBEAN?" (doesn't that sound like a an ice cream flavor?) I'll have a scoop of mint chocolate chip and a two scoops of that tasty CARRIBEAN.

You'd think he would have caught it the first time, but having it air on both newscasts just puts the proverbial cherry on top.

According to the KBMT website, Childress is "a multi market award winning television weather forecaster."

An award winning speller? Not so much.

Again, on a day where your own Web site has the headline, "Gustav in the Caribbean joined by Hannah in the Altantic," it's probably not a good idea to criticize the local TV stations.

Sadly, we never knew Al Tantic, but we hear he was a great guy.

The Iphone, e-mail, text messaging, young and dumber by far generation have never learned to spell correctly. Phonetics were the death of spelling and a generation is measurably dumber for having succumbed to that. If I have to hear another person say " I seen...something," I may not be able to resist the urge to grab'em by the ears, spin around four times and let fly.

KBMT and all other media outlets have a higher responsibility towards the community they serve! We as a community should hold them accountable for everything that comes on their channel. They need to stop making excuses, correct it and move on and be a better news outlet. Now more than ever we need our media outlets & meteorologist on top of their game!

Still waiting for Gator for list the daily mistakes in the Enterprise. You know, in the name of "biting satire."
