Daybreaker: KBTV's Jim Walker LOVES to "Facebook"

Social media is the gift that keeps on giving.

Take Facebook, it's a magical place where you can update all of your "friends" on your innermost thoughts. Gems like, "pizza is the new chicken wing" or "so glad that genital herpes flare-up has subsided."

Things you probably should've kept to yourself.

Take this little back-and-forth.

A KBTV viewer emailed station head, Chris Pruitt, a note about the evening newscast. Here is the full text:

"Mr. Pruitt,

I recently moved to SE Texas and love the area! My priority is to learn all I can about my newfound community. That's where your station and the others come in. I truly love Sheldra on the anchor desk. Her warmth and wit invite me in and make me feel connected! She is a gem! I truly wish I could say the same about her co-anchor. Mr. Walker, though physically attractive, doesn't excude (sic) the same warmth or sense of caring. I get the feeling "it's all about him." That suspicion recently was confirmed for me when a co-worker introduced me to his Facebook page. I don't know why it angered me to the point of writing to you. I don't even know why I care. I guess it's because I believe you truly could have a great station that makes the community the center of its mission rather than a body building circuit boy anchor who seems more concerned about having the public adore him. My point is simple. I want to fall in love with your station, but I just can't. Thanks for listening."
Pruitt pens a short, but courteous note back. No harm, no foul.

The fun comes when someone (wonder who?) alerts lead anchor, Jim Walker, to the viewer letter. An avid Facebooker, Walker immediately heads to the internetz to flog the unsuspecting writer. Nevermind the fact that the viewer says IN HER LETTER that she has seen (and has access to) his Facebook page.

Walker updates his "status" to read:
(Click it to big it)

Once Walker lets the "catfight" outta the bag, the pile on begins. Walker's pals load up on the woman, tossing around words like "d*****bag" and "b***h." Walker, himself, does the most damage.

He says this during the exchange:
"This woman, yes, woman-probably a bible thumbing b**ch from around here, claims she was offended. She is probably the same type that stands on her toilet, looking over her fence, calling the police because her neighbor is swimming in his backyard pool in the nude."
No he di'int!?!?!!?

A "friend" of Walker's chimes in: "she just wanted a piece of your hot bod but is pissed off cuz she wants what she can't have!"

To which Walker responds, "probably not too far off. Either that or her husband said he do me! lol."

Shut your mouth!!!!?!!?!?

OMG! So HI-larious, Jim! Can we talk? Along with every other teenager in the world, we're also on Facebook. It's fine and all -- kind of the 21st Century equivalent of an endless high school reunion. But you are the lead anchor of a network news affiliate; you hold a position of trust and power in Southeast Texas. Would Wolf Blitzer ever call someone a "b**ch" on his Twitter page? Doubt it.

Regardless of whether this woman has an agenda or not (and she very well might have), you need to take the high road. Why? 'Cause it's your job. We know that there are folks on your "friends" list that have NEVER met you, don't know you and shouldn't have access to your ultra-personal musings (does anyone really have 1,651 close pals?). You might want to consider being, um, a bit more selective. You could set up two accounts: one for personal use and another for FOX4 fans.

Futhermore, the hypocrisy of it all. During the exchange, Walker says that he's "floored by the small people out there who wouldn't dare have the b*lls to approach me in person." Isn't attacking someone on your Facebook page (who reads your site through a third party) a rather indirect way of handling a confrontation? We're just sayin'. A better reaction might have been to invite her to the station, give her a tour and introduce her around. Oh, that's right; making fun of her on Facebook is a ton easier.

Walker moves on from his cyber therapy session, but not before the damage -- and quite a bit -- has been done.

(Click it to big it)

In the end, the woman who started this whole imbroglio writes another note to Pruitt:
"My intention was just to offer my opinion. It wasn't to rile Mr. Walker. I am sure he is quite capable--if not always accurate. I've learned from co-workers that Mr. Walker and his fans seem to think I called him an "airhead." Please check our earlier correspondence. That word never appeared, but words that have appeared since then in reference to me are "b**ch", "jealous b**ch", "Bible thumbing b**ch", "sill (sic) overweight b**ch", "Shoot'r in the head", and several other acts I won't dare mention. Since accuracy and discretion are not held in high regard at your station (as evidenced by the following Facebook string on the matter), I can assure you that neither my family nor my spiritual loved ones will be taking you up on your offer to check out your 'entertaining' morning show."
Could she have had an ulterior motive? Perhaps. She did send this string of correspondence to the CEO of KBTV's parent company, Nexstar, as well as the head of Nexstar human resources and an investment firm with a large stake in Nexstar. It was also sent to The Beaumont Enterprise newsroom (which is how we got wind of it).  She obviously did her homework.

Heck, anyone could find out. After all, the woman’s letters have to go into KBTV’s public file -- an FCC requirement.

The bottom line: treat social media with kid gloves, you just never know who might be reading.

Well said, Gator. Everyone - not just media personnel - needs to be aware that their online profiles are NOT private, no matter what their security settings say. Employers are utilizing these networking sites: a moment's frustration, a poorly thought out status update, and your job can be history.

You are NOT in a private conversation on Facebook or Myspace - it is public, it is transmissible, and it very well could come back to bite you in the wallet.

As far as Jim Walker is concerned, I hope he grows up. His published behavior seems to corroborate the viewer's opinion of him. If I were his employer, we would be having a stern closed-door meeting. He has damaged the credibility of KBTV, and they should not stand for it.

Your right Doogie, Jim is a stud and I am sure that's part of the jealousy and useless people complaining about this. Grow up people, this is the U.S.A. Try the other two stations, talk about lame and dry topics... Keep up your great work Jim, you are one of the best KBTV4 has had... Hate to form a boycott in S E Teaxs! YOU ROCK JIM WALKER~

Hey RUSS,

I agree, freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, but anyone in the news business can be whatever they want in a PRIVATE setting. Broadcasting negative comments from a viewer and then getting all your friends to pile on and attack her isn't the best way to handle the situation. People criticize news media all the time (in case you haven't noticed from this blog). Everyone in the world is not going to like everyone else. That's why having a thick skin is important.

And good luck on starting that boycott in "S E Teaxs." I don't know where that is, but in SE Texas, people would probably laugh it off.

Do you watch their news? I'd classify it as "viewer abuse". Then again, like most people, you probably don't watch their news.

You could measure Garden Lizard's integrity by the amount of time he paused and thought before he posted this new low for the Bayou.

Obviously Garden Lizard writes this crap while sitting on the toilet suffering stomach spasms from that cheap mexican food he eats across the street from the Enterprise.

I'm curious Mr. Kelly, was there a small tremor there when Garden Lizard hit the post button.

Oh well, chips, salsa, large chunks of cheese enchiladas and refried beans swimming in a cheap 40 oz went down the sh****r along with the Enterprise's reputation.

in my humble opinion, jim walker really showed his ass by attacking a viewer and having his "friends" attack her as well.

he proved himself to be a very immature "man" who probably got off on attacking a female viewer. i wonder if he feels more manly now?

how about it jim? do you feel more manly? it takes a "real man" to attack a woman, doesn't it?

if i were his employer, (and he should thank god i'm not), his manly ass would be out the door for his sad representation of the company who pays his salary. when you call someone a bitch, whether in person or on your facebook page, and you're a well-known (well, maybe not so well known), media person, your actions reflect back on your employer. i'm so sorry that fox4 has to lower its standards to hire such a manly man as this . . .

I'm taking bets on how long it will take for Jim's friends to post his defense on this blog. Where are all the ch 4 defenders?

SETMediaMonitor said...

Regardless of whose side you are on, the basic predicate of free speech is the issue here. Walker has "friends" that came to his defense. The woman in question has a remote control to change the channel. If Walker wants to talk trash it is his right. If the woman doesn't want to watch KBTV TV4 she doesn't have to.
As for the people making comments, this is just another example of how the Beaumont Enterprise sensationalizes an issue just to bring traffic to its Web site.

jim fan club president said...

Free speech? This isn't about free speech! It's about being professional and being held accountable for your actions.

When you are a public figure (even if no one watches), you should be careful of what you say and do in public. Facebook is public.

By being an anchor and a main one at that, you represent your station - like it or not.

And the fact that your boss will come on here to defend your gutless actions says a lot about the integrity of your "news" organization.

Yes, you have freedom of speech. But that freedom also puts the reputation of your station and your co-workers in a worse position than they are already in.

God bless America!!

Home of the free and the brave... Right? It is considered brave to post on here and facebook.

Hello folks! This woman who sent the Facebook to the material admits she was SNOOPING!

Jim's page is private and she was not among those on his friend's list. She was never mentioned by name, yet she attacks Jim, how fair is that?

Public people, from Nancy Pelosi to Rush, fight it out all the time. Why doesn't this woman let us know who she is so we can judge her the way she feels she is qualify to judge this guy?

Channel 4 and Mr. Walker should be ashamed that this has gone as public as it has.
The Enterprise should be ashamed for grasping at drama-straws and trying to stir the pot.
You, the reader, should be ashamed for still reading this crap.

I remember when a media-report meant something. Now it's just gossip, especially in this bigoted tiny town that thinks far too highly of itself.

as for walker and now his station manager, both of them ought to be ashamed. each should have taken the high road, gosh, from what mr. pruitt has said today, and in previous posts, seems a lot of folks at fox4 have gone through trials and tribulations. imho, none of them have grown.

to do what walker did is in such poor taste, and to represent his company in such a way, and to be "defended" by his boss? good golly, i sure hope the folks who own this station take a good look at what's going on here.

and for those who want to throw stones at the emptyprize and this blog, you don't have to read it. but it seems like it's something you just love to hate, and can't get enough of. remember, it's irrelevant and irreverant, ya'll need to lighten up.

Remember Madonna and all her stunts with videos and the Erotica book? It works.

Why can't people keep this clean? Sexual orientation has NOTHING to do with this topic.

Let's see, he has how many friends are on his facebook page? 1,651 you say? I'm guessing that as a news anchor, he has added most of these from viewers, which would tend to make this a, "Jim Walker, Channel 4 Guy" facebook page, not a, "Jim Walker private citizen" page. Being that this happened like it did, I would think Channel 4 has little recourse except to discipline him in a fair and just manner. If this had happened on his, "Jim Walker, private citizen" page, where only FRIENDS of Jim Walker were allowed, then Channel 4 should have zero recourse.

Just an observation....

Anonymous said...

In response to my own post....if he only has 1,651 friends on his facebook page, and he is an anchor for what was one of the big 3 networks, then all I can say is that either Channel 4 is not relevant at all, or Jim Walker is just generally not liked by the million + viewers in this area.

Society has become so engrossed in what public personalities are doing. If you think Jim Walker has tarnished the image of his news station, turn the TV off or change to another network. No one cares about you and your opinion.
You are obviously a frigid homophobe and you're jealous because Jim gets more than you do.

Since you have nothing better to do, I suggest you read the United States Constitution.

This has the direct smell of setup and the "lady" is probably a wife or significant other of either the station manager or one of the other anchors/ news staff ! Nextstar/ KBTV have been aware of Jim's Facebook since it has existed, which is a pretty long time. He is a frank, honest and articulate person and is very "real" in his postings. What I want to know is: Is Jim's contract coming up? this would explain a lot! Maybe Jim isnt renewing ( and the station folks are upset about this!) or maybe his contract is coming up and there are back stabbing news staff that want his spot!
2) Why all of this now? My opinion is that this can only be an inside setup. Nobody else cares but the inside folks!! Rock on Jim!! You have a lot of support out here, you are the only good thing that station has going on!!

reading the constitution said...

To jims "fans" (if that's what they call it) who posted today, I've got a few notes:

1. Deep throat - irony that you are defending jim is duly noted.

2. If the mayor of beaumont posted a tirade on facebook berating a critical citizen that showed up at a council meeting, wouldn't anyone consider that somewhat newsworthy? Or if she mouthed off at the citizen in a public forum of oh, let's say 1,651 people? Guess what? Having an audience of 1,600+ facebook friends makes it pretty public. And if its none of my business then don't parade it to an audience online that is bigger than your viewership.
3. If it was a setup, then that dumba** meathead took the bait. By that reasoning, they shouldn't prosecute horny men who solicit undercover cops. Yes, let's leave the dealers on the streets. No reason to pick them up if they were set up by police to sell drugs to them.

No one forced Jim to childishly retaliate against one person's opinion. And it doesn't say much if a station will back such preschool behavior from a 50+ year old man.

4. I seriously doubt he would be set up by any of the competition. Its to their favor for 4 to keep someone who continues to undermind the credibility of the station on the air. Besides, you really think the competition considers a station that has such tiny ratings an actual threat?

5. "Try reading the constitution". Last time I checked, it
Didn't reference the high school antics online of a middle-aged man.

His Facebook and Myspace pages are his personal business and if his employer stands behind him, you others need to suck it up and get over it. Jim is NOT a jackass unless he is forced to be. He is a very kind, giving man. The problem with you haters is that you do not know him as others of us do. This gina m busybody attempted to get Jim fired. Where does she get off going into the private affairs of someone. If somebody doesn't like what I have to say, they better not go to my boss or they will find themselves a Defendant in a lawsuit. There are lines you don't cross. Some morons out there do not understand this. Jim Walker is an extremely intelligent man who has the right to defend himself when attacked. Busybodies beware. You better think before you try this with other people, calling their employers, mailing items to the employers of those who put you in your place.

Anonymous said...

oh mr., or is it ms. deep thoat?

ya see, the problem here is not a matter of the constitution, it's the matter of a public figure who represents a supposedly respected news organization who decided to use a derogatory name against a woman who made a complaint about him. How does Faux4 expect any of its viewers (it still has some, yes?) to respect its news boredcasts when its anchor chooses to do what he did?

as a public figure, this "manly" man knows, (if he didn't before he does know), that anytime he's out doing something, or writing something, or posting something, etc., it all has the potential of coming back and biting him in the ass. <;-)>

with as many his so-called friends on his page, which i care not to view tyvm, does (did?) he really believe that anything he posts there would remain private? Please remember, someone he gave access to allowed (i think the woman said introduced) her to see his page. Would you not surmise the same "friend" showed her all the other postings?

whether private or not, once it became public, Faux4 should have had something a little more stern to say to its employee, and privately. now that its station manager has entered into the fray, his reputation also is in question. the station manager should have stayed out of it, at least in public, and let his anchor take his (well deserved) hits.

nothing on the internet remains private. we should all know that. if you're dumb enough to say it, write it, blog it, twitter it, tweet and whatever hell else is out there, you should be manly man and woman enough to take what comes back to get ya.

as a public figure, this manly man has revealed some extremely harsh feelings he has for a woman who criticizes him. wonder what he might have done if she were face to face with him? he should have taken the high road, kept his mouth shut, and gone on with his life. you may think his pages are private, but they are not. and since he put himself out there as a public figure for a "respected" news station, he should always maintain himself and act as if someone is watching him all the time, because they probably are.

you say he's not an elected official like the mayor. the mayor is a public figure as well. anyone who puts his- or herself out there, such as a news anchor, a performer, actor, reporter, etc., becomes a voluntary public figure. and in instances where respect and credibility are concerned, such as with a news anchor, that person should always act and speak with respect. this manly man has lost credibility and respect. when ya lose that, ain't much else to lose left.

I don't watch KBTV news. I've never contacted the management of the station. You apparently are confusing me with the viewer of whom Gator speaks. Not me.

As for your accusation of homophobia, you're welcome to think what you want, but were you to take the time to talk to my gay friends, they would laugh at you.

All I said was that if I were a station manager and one of my key on-air personalities participated in an inflammatory and profane PUBLIC discussion, I would be talking with them about it. That's probably why I'm not a station manager...I expect more of people.

As for as the 1st Amendment, most of us know already that public persons do not have the same expectations for privacy as us mere mortals.

I decline to comment on pumped up gay men and their emotional constitution. But the Deep Throat handle, I must say, is very hilarious.

Only saw this guy once, in a half-naked print photo. Then saw another fox person was wearing bikini in contest to fight sex abuse!! Just not that into news "personalities.". ya know, i just re-read the woman's original letter about our manly man . . . "though physically attractive, doesn't excude (sic) the same warmth or sense of caring. I get the feeling "it's all about him." That suspicion recently was confirmed for me when a co-worker introduced me to his Facebook page." There was no mention of anything specific on his facebook page in the original musing. she continues . . . "I don't know why it angered me to the point of writing to you. I don't even know why I care. I guess it's because I believe you truly could have a great station that makes the community the center of its mission rather than a body building circuit boy anchor who seems more concerned about having the public adore him."

i ain't seen the page, don't care to, and i don't watch faux4, but if manly man were my employee, who is representing my station in a very public position, and manly man stated what he did on his page, which with 1900 plus friends can't be considered "private", he'd be saying mea culpa mea culpa mea culpa from now this the cows ate all the cabbage. as a former journalist, i say this, we all are held to higher standards, whether in print or broadcast. people here like to think they can count on you to be honest, truthful, respectful, and compassionate. they don't expect someone they see on tv every night five nights a week to be a real ass by calling a woman a name because she voiced her opinion about him. back in my day, something like that would have gotten just about anyone fired on the spot.

to gina m's neighbor, i say this, the woman did not go to manly man's work place, she voiced her opinion in a letter and did not specifically identify anything on his facebook page. once again, as a public figure, he should always act as if someone is watching, because someone probably is. when you take the low road, as he did, people will voice their opinions very loudly, and it reflects poorly not only on manly man, but on the faux4 station he represents. yes he is entitled to a private life, however, his life really isn't private because he's decided to be a public figure. and when you're a public figure, unlike private citizen, anything doesn't go anymore.

manly man, as a gentleman, should have taken the high road, taken his hits and be done with it. by his musings on his page, he has shown he's no gentleman.

She just said she did not like how he comes across the TV as being arrogant and she said when her co-worker (who had access to Walker's facebook page because they were his "friend") showed her Walker's page, in her opinion it confirmed her suspicions of him being arrogant. It was Walker's friends and supporters who made this a gay/anti-gay issue by labeling her a homophobic. How interesting that anyone would be watching the news thinking about what kind of underwear the talent has on. What kind of perv are you?

Sounds like you're more into Jim than you're willing to admit here. Do you watch the news with one hand? I bet you do.

As a matter a fact... I watch ch. 4 using both hands.

One hand is over my right ear. The other over my left. Then I just close my eyes.

Ahhhhhhh. Much better.

That is why beamount is a backward out of sync hick town for bigots.

This woman who went after Mr Walker is a pefect example of what a facist is...how un-american.

SF: Calling someone un-American is more akin to fascism than writing a consumer letter of complaint, or even negative networking. Read up on some politcal science, would ya?

Don't know what kind of obnoxious gays you got up there, but around here we like our homos (along with everyonr else) to be respectful of women. Nobody bashes Texas women.

Sounds like she's more of a stalker. If I were him I'd get a restraining order!

Walker is a public figure, and if he facebooks much at all, he should know what he's getting into by ranting online. Shame on him. Gives gays a bad name. They are not all women-haters.
