Daybreaker: Can You Quantify Texas-Sized Loyalty?

Lists are one of the things that make the internet go 'round. And the writers at Forbes churn them out as if they're being paid by the stat.

The latest attempts to quantify "loyalty." Using some sort of mathematical hocus-pocus, Forbes makes an effort to measure the most loyal baseball fans.

We know what you're thinking, the Red Sox or Cubs have the most loyal fans. Right? That is what we thought, too. But we'd all be wrong. The most steadfast followers in Major League Baseball cheer for the...Texas Rangers.

Here's an explanation:
"...Texas Rangers fans who flock to the Arlington ballpark through last place finishes and playoff runs alike. The Ranger faithful don't care if the team trades away its best players or spends $252 million to sign an MVP-caliber batter like Alex Rodriguez. No team's attendance is less tied to its on the field performance than the Rangers', and nowhere else in the country do fans peel off at a slower rate when the club has thin years."
The Red Sox, Cubs, Braves and Pirates round out the top 5. As for our nearest local squad, the Astros, they have the third most apathetic fans. Sadly, even a relatively new ballpark can't help the rocket men.

And while Ranger fans may dole out serious cash to attend games, are they really into the action or is there simply plenty of personal and corporate money in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to consistently fill up the ballpark day after day no matter what the team's record?

Not to knock the Rangers, but if Forbes could whip out a method to measure the volume of cheers or count the number of fans that hung around past the 6th or 7th inning, we think the results might have been a bit different. Some things just can't be measured.

TOP 5 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAMS (BASED ON AVERAGE ATTENDANCE)
  • New York Yankees (Avg. 52,850/game)
  • New York Mets (50,784/game)
  • Los Angeles Dodgers (45,330/game)
  • St. Louis Cardinals (42,360/game)
  • Philadelphia Phillies (42,220/game)
Houston Astros rank #12 (35,952/game)
Texas Rangers rank #25 (25,488/game)
